Her thesis was on the social life of three South Texas border counties. She received a Rockefeller grant in 1934 (Niggli received Rockefeller fellowships in 1936 and 1938). From 1939 on, González lived in Corpus Christi, where she and her husband (a grade-school teacher) collaborated on creating two books to teach basic Spanish, and struggled against racial prejudice throughout their teaching careers. A large wave of Anglo-Americans from the Midwest, seeking cheap land and exploitable labor, moved into south Texas early in the twentieth century, changing the political tone and peace of ‘Mexicans’ and Anglos living side by side that had existed in the nineteenth century.

Later, Portillo-Trambley became the first Chicana writer to adapt the seventeenth-century nun of colonial Mexico as a model of intellectual aspiration, in her play Sor Juana. Her short stories, published as Rain of Scorpions (1975), portray the female struggle to live autonomous lives, the most radical being that of a character in The Paris Gown. Although deserving of further study, Portillo-Trambley’s works have received little critical attention; in the case of her novel, this is most likely because it was overshadowed by the publication of Sandra Cisneros’s House on Mango Street two years earlier.
