Upon plasma nitriding the compound layer type was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and microstructure by optical microscopy methods. Hardness depth profile, roughness and change of crankshaft journal and pin diameters were also measured. Fatigue strength was tested on a bending fatigue machine. It was found that plasma nitrided crankshafts having 0,4 mm diffusion zone and a very thin compound layer of 760 HV0,3 hardness showed much better fatigue strength than not nitrided crankshafts and better than gas nitrided ones.
