Graphis, Rhytisma).

The asci are produced individually in a basipetetal direction (Fig. 9). The cells between the developing asci transform gradually into a pseudoparenchyma with isodiametric cells (Figs lOll). This tissue weathers away and the asci become exposed. Ascogenous hyphae may be observed invading from the vegetative tissue into the ascostroma (Fig. 10). ASCOCARP DEVELOPMENT IN THE "ZWISCHENGRUPPE" Ascocarp spot-like or lirelliform. The first stage observed in Anhothelium spectabile is the formation of the hyphal web of generative tissue.

The paraphysoidal system may be either transitory or persistent, and then plays the role of interascal filaments ("paraphysoids"). Similarly, the "pericentral envelope" divides, from bottom to top, into a floor, a lateral muff, and a roof. Widening of the ebauche is an important feature in many ascomycetes. It generally results from the activity of a peripheral growth zone, usually ring-shaped. In some cases, as shown in Fig. 3 (left), its structure recalls that of the primordium. New undifferentiated hyphae are born outwards, the differentiating processes occurring inwards.
