Mter smoking a pipe with the Smallweeds, George makes his way home to his shooting gallery near Leicester Square. Commentary New characters, the Smallweeds and Trooper George, are introduced, who are to have important bearings on the plot, though the connection between Hawdon and earlier events is still obscure at this stage. The Smallweed family are among Dickens's most powerful examples of the grotesque in Bleak House, the grandfather's treatment of his aged wife being both comical and frightening.
Commentary This chapter continues to unfold the mystery of Hawdon's identity and his connection with Lady Dedlock, and further complications are engendered by Tulkinghorn's angry words at the close. The Bagnets represent another force for responsibility and love in the novel, and Mrs Bagnet's housekeeping almost has a symbolic quality. Dickens treats the Bagnets with comic affection, for, though they represent one of the happiest marriages in the novel, Mr Bagnet obviously feels the need to pretend that he is in charge, rather than his wife!
Neglect or indifference to the network of human relationships, however, is always serious and sometimes can be tragic. The irresponsibility of the High Court of Chancery leads to the deaths of Tom Jarndyce, Gridley and Richard Carstone. Neglect of children by their parents can lead to disaster, as it does in the case of Lady Dedlock. And neglect of the disease-ridden slums of Tom-all-Alone's by the High Court of Chancery, and ultimately Parliament, can bring disease to St Albans and rural Lincolnshire.
